Airline Pilot Hiring

It is obvious to pretty much everyone that the airline pilot job market is depressed at the moment but is the airline industry dead or just injured? There has been very little airline pilot hiring in the last 18 months and with the industry shrinking, jobs for newly hired pilots are hard to come by. All is not lost, there are signs that the end of the recession is looming and the airlines are starting to think again about airline pilot hiring.

In some parts of the world there has been no recession, only a slowing down of expansion. These developing countries have large mobile population that are just starting to consider flying the large distances to visit friends and families. There is always a need to ‘buy’ experienced pilots in these expanding airlines and they have factored in the cost of attracting the senior captains from overseas. How does this affect the newly qualified pilot? Any expansion in the number of pilots will draw people from the regional carriers, creating vacancies for the less experienced. This can be seen in the UK with a regional carrier starting the planning process for recruiting and opening a cadet scheme.

Like so many things in life, timing is everything with the airline pilot recruitment. There is a ready flow of information that can be found on sites like Flight Crew Finder as well as all the best tips and hints for networking and interviewing. Before you apply to any airline, you will need to consider if you are suitably qualified for the airline looking for pilots. If you are not you may have to think about gaining these qualifications.

Before you leap towards buying a type rating you need to do a careful cost/benefit analysis, there may be better ways at boosting your employability. Real time airline experience is a good thing. I know of many senior captains who have worked as flight attendants before they were hired as pilots. You need to get to know your target airline and try to make sure your CV is on the top of the pile. Talk to people at your local flying club, do they know anyone from the airline who you could chat with? I have spent many hours talking about my employer with people looking for work and most of them are now colleagues.

Buying a type rating is coming more popular with the low cost airlines seeing this as a way of reducing their costs and even as an income stream. Is it a good idea? Generally no it’s not but, I do know of people who have secured good jobs with airline after buying a type rating and gaining some experience as an unpaid copilot. It must be considered as an investment in your future and as with any investment there are risks. How confident are you that you will be able to complete some meaningful line flying within a year? You should aim to get about 300-500 hours flown in your first year to consolidate your training.

The airline pilot hiring is still taking place albeit at a lower level of insensitivity than before. The airlines will continue to expand slowly and there will be a shortage of experienced pilots within the next 5 years. People love to travel and a short weekend trip is now considered a normal thing to do. Being an airline pilot will offer some people exciting, well paid employment but you need to plan your training and make sure you are prepared to invest time and money in making your dream come true.

Aviation Jobs

There has been a reported forecast of a shortage of pilots for the expanding global aviation industry. The reality very different. If you have thousands of hours in command of heavy jets and you are type rated and current and willing to travel to the other side of the world, there are precious few aviation jobs around. The flying schools have been producing hundreds of freshly qualified pilots very month and that makes the competition very tough for the few flying jobs out there.
