PART 1: Look Inside the Aviation Industry.
Every successful Commercial Airline Pilot has a story.
A story of their success. Most will love to tell their story but you have to ask.
Right now you are writing your own.
Gaining knowledge in the different ways pilots made it will help you gain an understanding of the process. Keep asking until you find out what they might have done differently – this is where the secrets are.
I was lucky enough to be told what not to do by my mentor – my father who was an airline pilot. Yep – I was an airline brat! (So was Craig!)
3 career-busting no-no’s…
- Don’t be a smart arse (excuse the language!).
- Don’t mess around and be unprofessional with an aeroplane – it WILL get noticed.
- Don’t stop striving for the next level.
With these 3 rules it gives you a chance to get into the industry hear about the process and movement without stuffing up your first impression.
Remember the Pilot Police?
What we learnt about the aviation industry is that it is close knit and the wrong information can hold you back.
Like we said earlier that every pilot will tell you their story and that is good, but what will give you the edge is if you can gather the information and work out what is useful to you.
Most pilots are well meaning but remember that not everyone makes it.
Also they could well be your competition, they may not tell you everything if it meant you got an advantage over them.
We have found that a pilot’s skill should be obvious. In an airline, a good Check and Training pilot will see this so don’t tell him/her how good you are as you will probably just annoy them.
Don’t fret though we have a solution!
How to make a good first impression…
- Listen and ask questions and then sit back and think about what is useful and practical information.
- Always understand who your audience is – you could be talking to the boss!
- Respect your position
- Earn Respect don’t try to demand it – big chance of back firing
- Get a Pilot Mentor – it’s like having someone to watch your back
Find a mentor that you can trust.
A GOOD PILOT MENTOR IS SOMEONE…
Who is not your competitor and
Who has made it that can give you the big picture.
Who can admit when they made mistakes
Who has avoided the 3 no-no’s

PART 2: Getting Yourself Known (for the RIGHT reasons!).
Not only put yourself out there but make sure you are known for the right reasons.
Rarely do pilots get jobs over the phone.
Look at it from a Chief Pilots perspective, if they employ you over the phone and you get there and aren’t what you seemed he/she could get stuck with you!
Drop in to any aviation company that will let you in! It shows initiative and drive.
Never Never Never Give up
2 reasons why it’s good that MAKING IT in aviation can be challenging…
1. If it was easy, everyone would/could be doing it
2. If it was easy, it would be boring
The do’s of getting yourself known…
Visit potential employers in person
Build a file of applications to airlines/operators (as soon as you have a CPL)
Follow up applications/visits with phone calls (be mindful of how often so as not to annoy)
Act Professional even from the start
Always strive for a good reputation
Be humble – remember you never know who’s listening
Keep a good perspective
The don’ts of getting yourself known…
Don’t TELL everyone how good you are – it should be obvious
Don’t break the rules – even if you think no-one’s watching
Get the job done
Respect experience (or as I like to say respect the ‘grey hair!’)
Don’t cover up mistakes – learn from them
I kept sending in resumes as soon as I achieved a new aircraft endorsement or at least every 6 months as I gained more experience. I am sure that my files were huge by the time I’ve experienced enough for an interview!
Remember the old saying that the squeaky wheel gets fixed. Be the squeaky wheel.
These days some airlines use online applications and may not let you apply until you have the minimum required flying hours but don’t let this deter you. Keep trying. Also, some airlines use contract recruitment companies to recruit and employ pilots. Keep yourself known as much as possible with these agencies
PART 3: How to get a flying job.
The Interview Process…
The interview process in any industry can be challenging. I have found that anything that seems at first challenging and difficult can be made easier if it is simplified into its core parts.
5 elements to a Successful Pilot Interview :
My advice for interview success is…
- Be yourself
- Trust Yourself
- Be Genuine in your answers
- Let your ability and experience be obvious and match what is in your logbook
- Practise some answers as a way to relax yourself in the interview
- Think about some experiences that demonstrate how you work as a pilot
For example, if you were going for an interview with a particular airline, talk firstly to someone who has recently had an interview and made it in. Someone that missed out could be a little resentful and not necessarily happily give you the best info.
Secondly, talk to someone who has been in the airline for a while. If you have avoided the 3 no-no’s above, you will be able to find a connection somewhere in the 3 degrees of separation that can give you the insider story.

- What are the 3 Career-Busting no-no’s?
- List some of the benefits of having a pilot mentor.
- Create a copy of the do’s and don’ts of getting yourself known and keep it somewhere you will see it.
- What are the key elements of a Successful Interview?
- Did you know that you can ask questions and get support from pilot mentors? That’s what it’s all about.
